I hate goodbyes and television news is a very transient business. Co-workers come and go, many moving on to bigger jobs in bigger markets. Today is our morning assignment editor’s last day. She’s moving back to her native Canada. To show her our appreciation we brought in Panera bagels. (It’s too early in the morning for cake). Although I find it a nice thought, I hate that we wait until a person leaves to show them how much we care. I think the tradition needs changing.
I once worked at a television station on the West Coast that did it differently. Instead of the traditional goodbye cake the Asst News Director decided it would be more appropriate and positive to do a welcome cake. So whenever a new employee started they got a welcome cake. It’s a great way for the new employee to be introduced to the newsroom.
So I say let’s just say so long to goodbyes….
